Why 10°C Feels Colder: Wind Chill Explained
The forecast says 10°C, so you dress for 10 — then stand at a windy corner and your face insists it is cold enough to snow. The thermometer is not lying. Your skin is reading something the forecast spells out separately: wind chill.
Wind steals your warm-air blanket
Your body keeps a thin layer of warm air against the skin, and that layer is your insulation. Calm air lets it hold. Moving air scrapes it away, so heat escapes faster and your skin cools as if the air were far colder. Wind chill is not the real temperature; it is the temperature your exposed skin behaves like.
The wind-chill feel, roughly
At a breezy 18 km/h in 10°C air, exposed skin feels closer to 6–7°C. Multiply the wind and the drop grows. That is why the apparent-temperature switch is worth flipping — punch in 10 with a wind speed and watch the "feels like" number fall below the air temperature you dressed for.
When it stops being a curiosity
Wind chill turns fatal when wind is strong and air is low. As the effective temperature drops toward freezing, exposed skin risks frostbite within minutes. Meteorologists report wind chill precisely because dressing for the raw number gets people in trouble when the wind is up.
Which number do you trust?
Use air temperature for anything touching what the air itself holds — thermostats, water, storage. Use wind chill (and in summer, heat index) for what to wear outdoors. Same Celsius, different job.
